Every summer there is an arts festival here which encompasses all sorts of weird and wonderful arts and crafts. Poetry reading, theatre, environmental artworks – you name it. They even have a fish soup competition (yes I typed ‘fish soup’) and if you’re very lucky you just might get asked to talk about your feelings regarding fish soup live on Serbian TV.

A dazzling range of stalls fill your view, behind which dozens of enterprises of every kind offer their wares and services to the many travellers. Internet, bars, restaurants – and of course lots and lots of accommodation. The surprise on our faces at paying only £3 for a bed suddenly vanishes when we see the bare, well used mattress on the floor – surrounded by plywood walls.
