Your opinion of Singapore will no doubt depend on where you’ve just come from immediately before. Although wherever you come from, Singapore is likely to be a stimulating place to visit.

If you’ve just landed from the UK, for example, it might not be too much of a culture shock. The thing you’ll notice first is probably the weather. The heat will probably hit you like a wall when you get off the plane; if it doesn’t, then you’ll get hit by some serious monsoon rain instead.
You’ll probably get struck by the fact that everything is really clean and really well organised and really sensible and really boring.
Just kidding, it’ll take a few days before you get bored of it. It will seem a lot more boring if you’ve just arrived across the causeway from Malaysia. The crumbling roads and chaotic, disorganised feel of Johor Bahru will contrast dramatically to the chewing-gum-banning Singaporeans on the other side.
If you like walking through endless heavily air conditioned shopping malls, then ducking out for some sweltering sunshine, before slipping back in to more air conditioned shopping malls, Singapore will be right up your alley.
In terms of food, you’ll find plenty of delicious Chinese cuisine to devour. Little local restaurants (away from the tourist area) are the best option for those on a shoestring. And if you want somewhere cheap to sleep, it might be a good idea to find a cheap hostel over the causeway in Malaysia, and then simply travel across each day.
As long as you don’t get caught smuggling chewing gum across the causeway, you’ll probably have a good time.
